Health Innovation Lab: Amii's New Pathway for AI-Driven Healthcare Innvation

Amii, in partnership with the Government of Alberta, has launched the Health Innovation Lab (HIL), a three-year initiative designed to accelerate the development and adoption of AI-driven healthcare solutions across the province.

What is the Health Innovation Lab?

The Health Innovation Lab is a partnership between Amii and the Government of Alberta, specifically with the Ministries of Technology and Innovation (TI), Primary and Preventative Health Services (PPHS), and Hospital and Surgical Health Services (HSHS). Amii has received a $10 million grant to create the Lab and support up to 12 projects annually. 

The goal: Use AI and Alberta's strengths in health data, computational power, and applied AI expertise to improve patient outcomes while growing Alberta's economy. Projects supported through the HIL are expected to apply AI and ML to real health system challenges, generate commercial intellectual property, and drive economic growth.

Funding Tiers

HIL funds projects across three tiers, designed to meet organizations at different stages of maturity:

Discovery Springs

Up to $50,000 over a one-year term. Intended for early-stage exploration and viability assessment of project ideas with high potential for commercial readiness.

Exploratory Projects

Up to $100,000. Designed for post-research ventures or internal innovations that are ready for early-stage development and have shown high commercial potential.

Large Projects

Up to $300,000. Aimed at initiatives that already demonstrate traction, have identified or secured a healthcare system partner, and are close to a market-ready offering.

Who is Eligible?

Organizations: Applicants must be legally registered entities in Canada, such as corporations, non-profits, post-secondary institutions, or health authorities. An individual can also apply if they are employed by, or hold a formal appointment with, one of these entities, with that entity acting as the contracting party for the funding agreement.

Location: The program is open to applicants from across Canada, not just Alberta. That said, out-of-province applicants need to demonstrate a substantive portion of project activity, benefits, or follow-on commercialization will happen in Alberta. Where two proposals are of comparable merit, preference may be given to Alberta-based applicants.

Financial standing: Applicants must be in good financial standing with no active bankruptcy proceedings. The program office may conduct corporate, bankruptcy, and litigation searches as part of due diligence.

What makes a project eligible?

Beyond organizational eligibility, your project itself needs to meet a few key criteria:

Health system relevance

Your project must use AI/ML to address a defined, specific challenge (listed below) relevant to Alberta's healthcare system, whether that's access, cost, quality, or workforce efficiency.

Measurable outcomes

You'll need to show a clear and measurable impact on Alberta's health system, whether that's improved system performance, better patient outcomes, cost savings, or improved healthcare delivery, along with clear value to Alberta specifically.

Commercialization pathway

Projects must articulate a path to commercialization, including how the solution could be adopted, scaled, or spread across Alberta's health system.

Specific Healthcare System Challenges the Project Must Address

Addressing Administrative Burden

  • Problem: Primary care teams face growing administrative demands—documentation, referrals, billing, and coordination tasks—that reduce the time available for direct patient care. This burden contributes to clinician burnout, longer wait times, and reduced continuity of care.

  • Opportunity: How can we reduce or streamline administrative workload so primary care providers can focus on delivering high quality, relationship based care and improved outcomes.

Advancing Chronic Disease Prevention and Management

  • Problem: A significant proportion of Albertans live with chronic conditions such as diabetes, COPD, and cardiovascular disease, yet many experience fragmented care, inconsistent monitoring, and preventable complications.

  • Opportunity: How can we improve chronic disease management through better coordination, earlier intervention, and patient centred supports to achieve better health outcomes and reduce avoidable healthcare utilization.

Addressing disparities in women’s health

  • Problem: Women in Alberta experience gaps in diagnosis, treatment, and access to care across the lifespan, particularly in areas such as reproductive health, chronic pain, cardiovascular disease, and menopause.

  • Opportunity: How can we design and deliver care that reflects women’s unique health needs, reduces disparities, and improves outcomes through more personalized, evidence informed approaches.

Applications go through a structured, multi-stage review

Proposal Submission

Applicants submit a detailed proposal with Amii's application.

Review and selection

Submissions are reviewed by a multi-level committee structure that assesses each project by the evaluation categories listed below.

Notice of decision

All applicants receive formal notification of the outcome of their proposal.

Key Dates and Process

August 17, 2026 - September 28, 2026

Stage 1: Proposal Submission

Applicants will be required to submit their detailed proposals through Amii’s application portal.

November 2026

Stage 2: Review and Selection

Submitted applications will undergo a review process by a multi-level governance structure.

January 2027

Stage 3: Notice of Decision

All applicants will receive formal notification of the outcome of their proposal.

Cette réussite illustre parfaitement le parcours « de la recherche à la start-up », qui permet de transformer des avancées universitaires en produits commerciaux homologués par la FDA.

Blinc Lab : là où les prothèses s'adaptent à vous

Dirigé conjointement par Patrick Pilarski, boursier Amii, titulaire de la chaire CIFAR en IA au Canada et membre du conseil d'administration d'Amii, le laboratoire BLINC utilise l'apprentissage par renforcement pour créer des prothèses intuitives et open source qui s'adaptent et s'améliorent grâce à l'interaction quotidienne avec les humains.

ROCHE : Combler le fossé en matière de données de santé

Notre partenariat avec Roche dans le cadre du projet « My Health Data Path » illustre la collaboration entre les acteurs du secteur pour assurer l'accessibilité de données complexes à grande échelle. Ce projet a réuni des acteurs majeurs du secteur des technologies médicales et des afin de créer des solutions numériques transparentes et centrées sur le patient.
